This coming weekend will feature Round 2 of the Elaine Watson Cup as the last 16 teams go head to head for a spot in the quarter finals.
Six Women’s Capital League sides remain in the competition with two sides guaranteed a spot in the quarter finals with Olympic FC v Kangaroo Point Rovers and Pine Hills v Ipswich Knights.
Rovers feature a potent line-up and both them and Olympic will be firm favourites to dominate the Women’s Capital League in 2020; so it’s perhaps apt to see them face-off here in the Elaine Watson Cup. It should prove to be a tight contest with Olympic coming off a 1-0 success over Brisbane Women’s Premier League side Annerley in Round 1 and Rovers dominating Toowong with a 6-1 win.
Pine Hills and Ipswich Knights, both having received byes in Round 1, are the other all Women’s Capital League tie in Round 2. Hard to say who will progress here with this being each team’s first competitive outing of the year.
There are four all BWPL ties, including cup holders Peninsula Power who head to Sutton Park to face Ipswich City. New City coach Archford Kahondo has recruited a number of new players which could make it a tough assignment for Power as they look to defend their title in 2020.
Promoted sides Grange Thistle and AC Carina each face different challenges – Carina host relegated side North Brisbane which could provide for a close, interesting encounter. Meanwhile Grange take on 2019 BWPL Champions The Lakes FC in what will undoubtedly be a far tougher tie. Thistle had to come from behind against Women’s Capital League side Taringa Rovers in Round 1 with a 3-2 success to reach the next round. They’ll need to improve if they want to get any kind of result against The Lakes.
Here are all the Round 2 ties:
Olympic FC (WCL) v Kangaroo Point Rovers (WCL)
Brisbane City (WCL) v Coomera Colts (BWPL)
